As we enter the final weeks leading up to our Philmont journey, our Boy Scout crew is ramping up preparations, both on the trail and at home. Weekend hikes have been a regular part of our routine, helping us build endurance and teamwork. The focus has now shifted to ensuring that everyone is fully equipped with the essential gear needed for the adventure ahead.
Recently, I took advantage of REI’s annual sale to stock up on ultra-lightweight air mats, utensils, towels, and dry bags. While investing in lighter gear can be more costly, the benefits for our long days on the trail are undeniable. I also realized the importance of proper hiking attire — while I have plenty of dry-fit shirts, I needed to upgrade to water-resistant convertible cargo hiking pants for better protection against the elements and critters. Thanks to a fellow crew dad’s recommendation, I found just what I needed.

A common question I hear is whether we’ll be able to stay connected during the trip. The answer is simple: we’ll be unplugged. While I plan to bring my phone for photos, there will be no cell service. We’ll have a satellite phone for emergencies, but, as a crew, we’ve committed to leaving screens behind and fully embracing the experience and beauty of nature.
Personally, I’ve lost over twenty pounds since the start of the year and feel great, but I still wonder if I’ve trained enough and packed the right gear. There’s some nervousness about how the altitude and weather will affect us, but I’m reassured knowing that I’ve done as much as I can to prepare. Ultimately, this journey is about sharing an unforgettable experience with my son and the rest of the crew — rain or shine, we’re ready to make the most of every moment.
